{"id":725,"date":"2014-01-26T11:28:48","date_gmt":"2014-01-26T16:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/?p=725"},"modified":"2017-03-05T19:52:06","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T00:52:06","slug":"breakfast-the-ghanaian-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/2014\/01\/26\/breakfast-the-ghanaian-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakfast the Ghanaian Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up at 6 this morning and knew exactly what I had a craving for &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-koko4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-732\" src=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-koko4-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Hausa Koko by Armenyl.com Blessed\" width=\"750\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">I remember the mornings when I was younger; I would drink this out a little clear plastic bag on my way to school. I&#8217;d shake the bag vigorously to make sure that the added sugar had mixed all the way through because <em>Hausa Koko<\/em><em>,<\/em> in particular, is quite spicy. \u00a0This is also the only time in my life that I would entertain the likes of both sweet and spicy flavors in one meal.\u00a0<em>Hausa Koko<\/em>\u00a0is a popular Ghanaian porridge made from millet and spices. Bofrot is sort of like a Ghanaian doughnut. Nigerians have a similar doughnut called Puff Puff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Getting <em>Hausa Koko and Bofrot<\/em>\u00a0in the mornings was an insurance my parents would use to make sure I was never late for school because not only was\u00a0<em>Hausa Koko<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Bofrot<\/em>\u00a0sold during tight schedules in the mornings, somewhere after 6a.m. and right before 8a.m., they were sold out pretty quickly as well. We would usually get there as early as 7:15a.m to ensure my happiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4024-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-726\" src=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4024-Edit-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Breakfast The Ghanaian Way by Armenyl Blessed\" width=\"750\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The queue for <em>Hausa Koko<\/em> was like I remembered them, long and impatient. Not everyone bought their <em>Hausa Koko<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Bofrot<\/em> to go, there were some who sat on benches behind the vendor drinking their <em>Hausa Koko<\/em>\u00a0out of a calabash. I enjoyed watching these people. They would tip their head back as they drank from the calabash, getting lost both behind the huge calabash and in their thoughts. Sometimes they would take a brief moment to regard the queue of hungry customers waiting to be served, not really thinking much of us, I imagine, and then move their eyes to nothing particular in the sky, a bite into their <em>bofrot<\/em>, then quickly back to their calabash of porridge before the <em>bofrot<\/em>\u00a0in their mouth was ingested.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-736\" src=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Hausa Koko by Armenyl.com by Blessed\" width=\"750\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-293x165.jpg 293w, https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1-1400x788.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/armenyl.com\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Hausa-Koko1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Those of us who took our porridge\u00a0and doughnuts to go, had our <em>bofrot<\/em> wrapped in an old newspaper and our <em>Hausa Koko<\/em>\u00a0in the usual clear plastic bag.
