Oil Pulling

Things I am trying out: Oil Pulling

I’m swishing oil in my mouth as I type up this post. I need to kill a good 15 – 20mns while the oil cleanses my mouth, so I thought I’d use the time to talk about the stuff in my mouth. Okay, I’m really writing this post because 15 – 20mns of silence is killing me I need someone to talk to. Swish, swish, swish! 2 minutes down 18 more to go.

I’m swishing organic unrefined sesame seed oil in my mouth. It tastes funny and feels a little weird. Alternatively, I could have used (melted) coconut oil or olive oil. For no particular reason, I prefer sesame oil. This is my 8th time oil pulling. I’ve only had the time and silence to do it twice this week, but I’m trying to do it more regularly now. First thing in the morning before eating any food and before I brush my teeth, I pour one tablespoon of organic sesame oil into my mouth. After 20 minutes of gentle swishing and pulling, I spit it out then rinse my mouth with warm salt water. I brush my teeth, floss, and I’m good to go!

I am not sure why I didn’t pay any attention to the oil pulling  method when I first heard of it last year, but it has recently gotten so popular from great reviews. I thought I’d finally give it a try. So what is oil pulling? It comes from an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves using a pure oil to draw toxins from the body. The reason oil pulling is done in the mouth? (Actually where else would you rather it’s done?)  The mouth is like the front door of the body where food, drink, and bacteria pass through to get into your system. Why oil?  Oil gets pretty “sticky!”  It acts like a magnet to draw out bacteria that just flossing and brushing cannot take care of.

Okay, I have 7 more minutes of swishing to go! Yay! 😀 *

In short, apart from whiter teeth and fresher breath, the detoxification effect of the oil pulling method has been known to improve issues like migraines, asthma, allergies, eczema, arthritis and more.

What I have noticed since my trial process is that it certainly does whiten the teeth and it gives an immediate detox feel. My mind felt less congested, and my teeth and gums felt much much healthier and cleaner. The immediate results were pretty spectacular!! Of course, I’m only about a week into oil pulling, so I can’t say much for its long-term benefits. I’m definitely going to keep it up, and I will be sure to update you on any other improvements I notice. I’m told clearer skin is one of them! Win!

In any case, it is important you do your own research before trying this out. I found most of my information on websites like this one and HeyFranHey’s Youtube channel.

Time to rinse out!
